Separation Anxiety Behavior

Program (Pilot Study)

This pilot study is based on a proven, evidence-based separation-anxiety behavior-modification protocol that is already effective as a stand-alone treatment.
The study explores whether the addition of the Assisi Calmer Canine™ PEMF device may support and potentially expedite progress when used alongside effective structured behavior modification.

Who This Program Is For

This pilot program is designed for dogs showing signs consistent with true separation anxiety or separation-related panic, not simply boredom or lack of training.

Your dog may be a good candidate if they display some or all of these common symptoms:

  • panic, shut down, cause injury to themselves, or become highly distressed when left alone

  • vocalize persistently (barking/howling) during absences

  • attempt to escape, scratch/chew doors, or show exit-focused destruction

  • pace, drool, cling or show clear anxiety during departures

  • cannot comfortably tolerate necessary and reasonable amounts of time alone

  • have been diagnosed with or suspected of having separation anxiety

Because this is a structured, behavior-first program, not every dog will be the right fit. Each submission is carefully reviewed to ensure the program is appropriate, safe, and likely to benefit your dog.

If your dog qualifies, we will guide you through the next steps.

What’s Included in the 8-Week Program

• Structured 8-week SA behavior-modification plan

• Weekly private in-home coaching sessions with owners

• Owner tracking and emotional-state metrics

• Calmer Canine™ device loaned at no cost to families

FAQ

1. What exactly is the Calmer Canine device? Calmer Canine is a PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) device designed specifically to help reduce anxiety. It uses the same technology as the veterinary-grade Assisi Loop, but is engineered for emotional regulation rather than orthopedic pain. It is: drug-free non-invasive silent FDA-cleared technology backed by published studies on anxiety reduction It is not a “quick fix,” but a supportive tool that can help your dog regulate emotions and recover more quickly during training.

2. How does PEMF help anxiety? PEMF works by supporting: reduced neuroinflammation improved calm-state brainwave patterns healthier activity in areas regulating fear and stress more balanced neural communication faster recovery after stress In simpler terms: It helps the brain shift from fight/flight to rest/regulate more easily. This creates better conditions for behavior modification to “stick.”

3.How often do I need to use the device? Twice daily for 15 minutes each, spaced about 8–10 hours apart. (Example: morning + evening.) Consistency matters much more than the exact times.

4. Is the device included in the total cost of the program? Yes! Since this is a study, there is no additional cost for the device itself. I own the devices and will loan them to study participants for the duration of their programs, at no extra cost.

5. How long until I see changes? Every dog is different, but many owners report: subtle calming changes within 1–3 weeks improved settling or reduced pacing within 3–4 weeks more noticeable emotional stability after 4–6 weeks The device is not meant to “fix” separation anxiety by itself, but to make the training process smoother and more successful.

6. Does my dog need medications too? Not always. The Calmer Canine can be used: with no medications, alongside medications, or as a support tool to help dogs who cannot tolerate meds. We collaborate closely with your veterinarian to determine what level of support your dog needs.

7. What if my dog doesn't qualify for the Pilot Study? You can still join my standard Composed Canine Program, which follows the same high-quality separation anxiety protocol and delivers excellent results. The Pilot Study simply includes additional data collection and access to a loaned Calmer Canine device. The core behavior-modification program is the same level of expert care regardless of study participation. You will not lose access to support, results, or the ability to progress if you aren’t in the study.

8. What if my dog won’t tolerate the device on their head? Very normal! We approach this just like any cooperative care exercise. Strategies include: pairing with restful enrichment gradual desensitization using the halo starting with shorter sessions using calming routines beforehand We will work together to find the right approach.

9. Is it safe? Yes — PEMF therapy is widely used in veterinary medicine. Safe for: puppies adult dogs seniors dogs on meds dogs with orthopedic issues reactive or anxious dogs Not recommended for dogs with implanted electronic medical devices (rare). Let me know if you have questions.

10. How do I track progress? You will use: a weekly training tracker daily checkboxes for Calmer Canine sessions notes on your dog’s emotional state weekly video submissions (when appropriate) This helps us adjust the program quickly so your dog succeeds faster.

11. How common is Separation Anxiety? Research shows that separation-related distress is one of the most common behavior challenges in dogs, affecting roughly 14–20% of pets in the general population and accounting for about 20–40% of cases seen by veterinary behaviorists. Not all dogs with “alone-time trouble” have true separation anxiety, but many show early signs such as vocalizing, pacing, drooling, or trying to escape within the first few minutes of being left alone. These behaviors are most reliably confirmed through home-alone video. Risk is higher after major routine changes, rehoming, or for dogs who become very attached to one person, and puppies who did not learn gradual alone-time skills may also struggle. With proper assessment and a structured training plan, most dogs improve significantly, and many recover fully.

12. Why is Separation Anxiety so challenging to resolve? Dogs cannot learn anything helpful when their fight or flight response is activated. Often, the things we do to try to help, can make things worse. Separation and Other Anxieties are complicated issues that effect dogs on a deep emotional level. Topical solutions or quick-fixes may initially “mask” the symptoms, but

13. Is it my fault? No. Anxiety is an underlying psychological problem internally, but there ARE things we do that can either help or hurt their anxious feeling and behaviors.

14. Will getting another dog help my dog’s anxiety? Oftentimes, no. Usually, the separation anxiety is related to human caregivers leaving, and other dogs don't always provide the amount of emotional support that dogs with separation anxiety need to thrive.
